We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelley Brooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelley, why did you pursue a creative career?
As a Mom of 4, I realized having a portrait with your children is very important! We have become so obsessed with cell phones and having digital images that we have forgotten about having an actual portrait or print placed in our home! My goal is to give my clients a beautiful piece of art that will become a conversation piece. There is nothing like sitting in your home and looking at a beautiful image of yourself or family. Over the years, my business became popular by word of mouth! Most of my clients were referred to me by other clients! I love when I am stopped in public and a person walks up to me and says, Do you remember me? You took pictures of my baby! This is the baby , who is now 6! It is the best feeling ever!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

It’s July and that means Christmas is around the corner. I have been ordering and prepping for my holiday season.I am currently focusing on marketing my ideal client, Highschool seniors. They are my favorite! I am booked with the Class of 2023 students. I love photo reveals with my clients and their parents. The expression on their faces as they are seeing their images for the first time is priceless. As a photographer, it is my job to bring my clients’ ideas to life. This allows me to be creative. I love being artistic. I am always thinking,”How can I improve myself”? This year I attended my first Photography Conference (WPPI). I remember walking out of my first class so excited about what I had just experienced! I cried! I realized then, I made the best decision to be a Photographer. I encourage anyone who wants to start a business to just start! We all have to start somewhere. You just have to find what motivates you, stay educated in your field. If I am not with a client, I love attending photography events.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a  L.A. girl at heart so we would definitely travel the city! We would start with breakfast at the Pan in Long beach.Their fully loaded hash browns with pineapple pancakes are everything! Shopping in the downtown Los Angeles fashion district is a must! I would have lunch at (At Home Restaurant) in Los Feliz. Im am obsessed with their chicken and waffles and fried calamari. They have the best bartenders and their customer service is always amazing! How can you live in Los Angeles and not experience Summer nights at the L.A. Zoo? This is the best time to enjoy the exhibits and cooler weather of a summer evening. We would have drinks at the Hawk in Long Beach. Their drinks are amazing! If I just happen to disappear, you can find me in the restroom. Where you will find me having a whole selfie photoshoot! No seriously! There is an instagram just for their wall paper in their restroom! The hawk is known for their beautiful taste in wall paper.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

My family and friends have been so encouraging throughout this whole process! I was always interested in photography and loved taking pictures of people. I just never took it seriously. It wasn’t until my husband brought me my first DSLR. He said to me, “Don’t talk about it, be about it!” That was the encouragement I needed. I attended my local Long Beach city college. They have an amazing photography and film department! I met a teacher by the name of Neil France. He encouraged me to participate in a galley displaying the work of a few students. This was the best experience. It allowed me to create some of the most beautiful portraits. I have been obsessed with creating portraits since.

Later I became a newborn photographer at a Hospital in California. Due to covid I lost my job. Although it was a hardship, it allowed me to take my business full time! I have had so many Nurses and staff reach out to me over the Pandemic to photograph their maternity, newborns, family sessions and headshots! I have been overjoyed with the amount of their support! When you’re working with a team, you see each other’s work ethics. But to realize that people recognize your talents and see the value in your work is such an amazing feeling!
