We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Romar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, how do you think about risk?
What I think about risk is that if your not willing to take one, then you will be in the same spot over and over. You have to take risks to be able to jump outside of your comfort zone to reach the next level. When I’ve taken a risk or multiple risks to do something for my career, it has helped tremendously. Rather it be reaching out to a sponsor I like to see if they will sponsor me, or trying a scary skateboarding trick down some stairs, or taking a risk to DJ different events that are outside of the normal to understand that not every party or event is the same and that you have to be prepared no matter the circumstance and be willing to take a risk on what songs you think will work for them. Risks sometimes have to be calculated tho, not all risks are good risk, but I think risks overall involve your intuition and what you think is best for the moment and that you have to be willing to go off of your gut feeling to take yourself to that next step.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am A professional Skateboarder & DJ from Long Beach, CA. I come from a broken home, and watched my mom struggle throughout most of my childhood. Seeing that hurt me but it motivated me to do something outside of the normal, when I picked up skateboarding I put my heart & soul into it. I was grinding through the tough years, trying to gain sponsors to help me get to a place I saw in myself that nobody else did. It was extremely hard in the beginning, I received hate from people I thought were my friends, sponsors did not want to sponsor me, money was short, I had to hustle as young kid, I had to go through a really tough time to get to be even an Amateur Skateboarder. I had to prove to the skateboarding community that I was for real and that took a really long time to do, but once I did, I got the respect from everybody in the industry and that took about 5-6 years to do as an Amateur. I’ve been a pro skateboarder for about 9 years now and it’s been a different story, a very good story to say the least, but it was the ultimate grind to get here. How I overcame those challenges was to stick to my script, what I know, what nobody can see that I see, I stuck to that, I shook off the haters, I shook off the injuries, (broke 11 bones) I shook off the negativity that was surrounding me and I just kept on pushing. That’s what it is, it’s a test, “if you really want it, the game will test you” as Nipsey Hussle says and that is the ultimate truth. The lessons I learned along the way is that to never give up, you could be right around the corner from your dream, and most people give up on it because they can’t see the corner, the lesson is the corner is always right there, you just have to keep the bus moving, you might be on E, but they’ll always be a way to make it if you just believe and don’t give up and keep pushing to do whatever it takes to get there. What I want the world to know about my brand or story is that I give 110% that I put into everything. I have a lot of heart. My story is that the journey is everything. No matter where you come from you have the ability to do anything you put your mind to. My brand is that I’m a solid well rounded individual and will give you the best quality of me and products you can get. I’d say I’m the most proud and excited that I’ve been able to become a Professional Skateboarder and a Touring DJ for the rapper named Hopsin. I’ve been able to travel around the world multiple times with with skateboarding and DJ’ing and it’s been a blessing!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First I’d take them to Gyu Kaku, it’s this bomb Japanese BBQ restaurant with amazing food. I’d take them to disneyland or six flags theme park in that week time frame. I’d show them some cool spots in LA or orange county during the week and take them to a dope skatepark, when the weekend hits if they wanted to party at night I’d take them to some dope clubs out here and we’d rage before they left.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Anyone that has helped me along my journey and get closer to my dream deserves recognition, Big or Small. There are too many to name, but if they read this they’ll know who they are. Also most importantly God, he deserves all the credit, without him I wouldn’t be able to do what I do.
