We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Maevers and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimberly, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Extraordinary service. People underestimate the level of risk associated with hiring a pet-sitter to come into their home and care for their pets. I encourage my prospective clients to ask LOTS of questions when they begin the hiring process. I encourage them to ask for professional credentials, proof of a business license, insurance and bond…and to ask what the “back up plan” is if for some reason the person they hired is unable to perform the pet care tasks they were hired for.

Once a client recognizes the difference between a hobby-pet enthusiast and a Professional Pet-Sitter I want them to be at peace with the decision to hire me. I text or email updates during every pet care visit and I leave detailed, written checklists and narratives of each visit as well. We care for a lot of special-needs pets, so it’s vital that my clients understand the experience we had with the pets and if there were any health concerns or issues.

Going above and beyond the “normal” pet-care visit is what we call “Peace-of-Mind Pet Care you can trust” and that’s a motto we’ve used since 2010.

What should our readers know about your business?
I founded Fun Fur U – In Home Pet Care in 2010 after I relocated from Colorado back “home” to California. Thanks to the great-recession, I was forced to pivot out of the homebuilding industry and figure out another line of work. My friend and mentor, John, encouraged me to put my passion for pets into a business idea. So, I sat down with my veterinarian and asked her advice. She told me that if she knew of a Professional Pet Sitter that specialized in Special-Needs pets that she could refer LOTS of business. She suggested that I get some training and education on how to care for special needs pets and she even offered to teach me a few things (like how to help a paralyzed cat use the toilet!). I enrolled in the 16-week professional pet-sitter certification course through the National Assn. of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS) and completed it in about 12 weeks and received my first certification in spring of 2010. I recently re-certified through Pet Sitters International and now am a twice-certified Professional Pet Sitter.

Once I launched my business, I started connecting with the local veterinary clinics, animal hospitals, groomers and kennels and introduced myself. I provided them plenty of business cards, pens, magnets and door hangers and I encouraged them to refer me to their clients whenever the topic of pet-care came up. My partnership with some of our kennels has been super-worthwhile as most special-needs pets (that may be ill, injured or on medication) typically cannot be kenneled due to liability risks. So, the kennels send me a lot of business that they cannot accommodate.

The pet-care business is full of fun, unconditional love, bites, scratches and lots of poop. It’s sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes scary, and sometimes lonely (especially during a pandemic when everyone is home with their pets!). The pet-care industry is ever-changing, and I am constantly learning…I have to be super nimble for last minute requests, un-scheduled emergency trips to the vet, and mindful of my own health, as well. I have to communicate with honesty and full transparency the good and the bad, with my clients, every day.

And, I must be an advocate for the pets I care for…sometimes they need help, and the owners aren’t seeing the cues. I frequently talk with my clients about pet-obesity prevention, and diet/nutrition…and that’s a very delicate subject for most pet owners. So, I arm myself with education and resources and become an advisor, along with the veterinarian and help pet-parents do better for their pets.

The Fun Fur U brand is growing and is on track to expand in the coming year…with more to come, soon!!!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This depends on the time of year and the friend that was visiting…but if they are the outdoorsy type, like me and it’s springtime in the Antelope ValleyI’d encourage you to start with hiking at Vasquez Rocks and Devils Punchbowl, then stroll through the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve and the poppy fields, then head north up the 14 and go out to the Trona Pinnacles and do some star-gazing overnight. In the AM, continue north on the 395 to Lone Pine and the Alabama Hills, up to Bishop and some of the secret hot-springs. Finally stopping in Mammoth and peering west across the Ansel Adams Wilderness towards the Minarets. After a night or two in Mammoth, head to Yosemite for some Chocolate Pecan Pie and Coffee at the Ahwahnee Hotel. For your return trip head east and drop into Death Valley for some golf at Furnace Creek and stay at the Oasis for great food, hiking and more stargazing…back to Lone Pine for lunch and pie at the Alabama Hills Cafe, then golf at Mt. Whitney golf club before heading south back through Mojave. In Mojave you should dine at the Voyager restaurant and watch for some cool test-pilots to pop in…take a peek over at Stratolaunch and see what the worlds largest plane is up to before heading back home.

That, could be a great way to spend a week with your best friend!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shout-out first would be dedicated to two extraordinary friends and mentors, who sadly have both passed from this earth. My friend and mentor of 34 years, Mr. John J. Perry who helped me realize the passion I had for animals could be crafted into a profitable and fun business enterprise. And, my friend and mentor Raimone Roberts who convinced me that I could be successful (and financially stable) if I quit my “day-job” and dove into my business full-time. Both men believed in me and encouraged me to look much further than just my current circumstance.
My next shout-out would be to my dear husband, Mark, my rock and my cheerleader! And, my friends and family. I am grateful for their constant love, support, and encouragement!!!
