We had the good fortune of connecting with Krizia Soetaniman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Krizia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The idea of starting my own design agency came to me way back in 2012, when I had my very first graphic design internship at a social media company in Beverly Hills, California. I never would have thought that working there would be the starting point of my graphic design career. It was at that moment I promised myself that in five years, I will have my own creative studio! After I graduated from FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising) in Los Angeles in 2015, I already had multiple work experiences from reputable companies like the Los Angeles Clippers, Blue Diamond, Snickers, AT&T, and many more. I flew back home to Jakarta, Indonesia, and started working as a freelancer. I didn’t expect how tough it would be in the beginning. It was mainly because I was a fresh grad out of college and had no connection in the design industry in Indonesia – I was essentially starting from zero. I started getting clients through word of mouth, but even so, many clients turned me down mainly because they wanted to hire a design studio with a full-fledged team rather than an individual designer. I started to plan out how to open my own creative company without burdening my parents, and it took so much planning, both financially and mentally. I took a lot of freelancing jobs like; branding, marketing and social media management. I worked around 12 to 14 hours a day to meet deadlines and get paid, so I can open my dream design studio. After saving enough, I started posting job listings on LinkedIn.com and rented a small coworking space to start my own creative company. I decided to name my company, MADE STUDIO – Design & Marketing. With the help of my cousin, we were able to start the business because of our past work experiences, as both of us had the same vision and were very passionate and hardworking individuals.
2020 has been a tough year for everyone due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many businesses in Indonesia closed down indefinitely and many people transitioned to micro-businesses amidst the lockdown in Indonesia. Most of these micro-businesses that sprung up were home-based businesses selling small batches of food generally through social media. Along with their orders, sellers would typically attach notes to make their product feel more personal. I have always loved paper-based products such as greeting cards, notebooks and tags, but it is quite rare to find affordable paper-based goods with quality design in Jakarta. So, by combining my love for paper-based products and my passion for design, I decided to open The Paper Hotel, where customers can customize a selection of pre-designed cards with their desired names or initials. I started The Paper Hotel as a hobby, but I was surprised by how well it was received! If you want to see more of The Paper Hotel, feel free to visit @thepaperhotel on Instagram. Getting where I am today is possible for everyone. It’s not an easy road but i believe everyone can do it as long as you work hard and have a goal. My personal design style would be modern minimalist, because I believe that less is more. But, as a company, Made Design Studio, we want to help people make their dreams to reality. We believe different people have different style So we execute all projects according to their vision. So, everyday is a challenge for us but It’s exciting!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank my school, FIDM Los Angeles for having a very helpful instructors, Golden Nest USA family and the Los Angeles Clippers design team for giving me the experience and molded me into the Creative Designer I am today. Of course, I would not be where I am today without the support of my loving family, friends, and the God above.
