We had the good fortune of connecting with Magdalene Nsek and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Magdalene, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It has honestly out of survival and soul searching. I was always into makeup and anime as a hobby, but taking my career with my own hands instead of waiting to be promoted in a regular job boosted my resume. I wanted to stand out but also be authentic while doing so. Otherwise, I would be like every other small makeup brand.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I know it could be easy for somebody to use prosthetics to make their cosplay look advanced. However, I want the anime fans and cosplayers to save money using everyday makeup to still get the same results. Chibi Cosmetics is really big on makeup hacks. Plus, getting more credibility by being a certified MUA has been helpful in marketing my brand. However, building my brand from scratch with my own money as a grad student was no walk in the park at all even with support. Having side hussles is still helpful financially so you’re not struggling as much as an entrepreneur.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend would want to go to the a fancy restaurant to try foods we’ve never eaten before along with shots at the bar to pregame. Then we would go to Venice Beach to check out the art and the exciting people. However, if there is an anime convention or Comic Con being held during the week, we’re cosplaying or favorite characters and taking pictures.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First and foremost, I have to thank my family for the prayers and support of me pursuing makeup full time. Most Nigerian homes force you to be in the medical field and keep makeup as a hobby. I also have to thank both of my universities Cal Baptist University and University of Redlands for my BFA and MBA to help me be a better entrepreneur. Most of all, I couldn’t do it without the support of all the small business expos in San Bernardino, CA and Riverside, CA regarding customers buying my makeup and supporting my services regardless of their interest in anime and cosplay.
