We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcus Segal and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marcus, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Early on in my career I decided that I would learn about management and strive to put my People first. Of course I want to make my investors and employees money too, but not at all costs. At every job I have ever had, I look to partner with my teammates to create and maintain a dynamic work environment where they can do the best work of their lives and grow professionally and personally in the process. The result of this commitment has been beautiful products made by happy employees who stick around for years.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
ForeVR Games is building beautiful immersive social games in virtual reality. Our goal is to bring people of all ages and abilities together in play. Starting a company during the peak of a pandemic was not easy but it has been tremendously rewarding as we have made it possible for people all over the world to escape and have fun.

It is still early days for Virtual Reality but the future looks bright as people are discovering these experiences.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
WOW!!! This box is not big enough for a week long itinerary. LA is so big that my strategy is always to pair an activity with an incredible culinary experience so that any traffic experienced is relatively minor. I’d take them on a bicycle Graffiti tour of downtown Los Angeles — there is a great tour available on Airbnb experiences. Afterwards we would eat at Grand Central Market (tons of great food – something for everyone).
Day 2 would be LACMA followed by Cecconis for dinner and then I’d take them to the Black Rabbit Rose in Hollywood for drinks and their incredibly fun and weird magic show.
Day 3 would be kayaking in Marina Del Rey — you can get right up close to Sea Lions — followed by lunch at Great White and then cruising around Venice Beach.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would dedicate my Shoutout to Chip Conley and the Modern Elder Academy. Chip has written several books on Management that have really resonated with me and influenced my approach to building teams (“Peak”, “The Rebel at Work” to name a few) . He also created The Modern Elder Academy (https://www.modernelderacademy.com/) which provides workshops for people at mid-life who are trying to figure out what to do next. I have benefitted greatly from Chip’s work and I believe his work has a lot to offer just about everybody.
