We had the good fortune of connecting with Mel Cornelo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mel, what is the most important factor behind your success?
As I developed my brand, my number one goal was authenticity. I spent hours every day flowing through class formats and exercises, tweaking things along the way, to create something I truly loved doing and knew my clients would love doing with me. Throughout my years of teaching, I’ve found the best classes and the best connections I build with clients are when I am 100% myself before, during and after class. I never feel the need to switch into a different persona as an instructor. My verbiage, cues, motivation, and relationships are all genuine and I think people really appreciate and connect with this. I love my clients, so many of them have become friends, and I believe that stems from them seeing me as a real person they can not only trust but also enjoy working with. These friendships and connections bring so much meaning to what I do and are the foundation of my brand’s legitimacy and success.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Mel Method is a workout designed for any age or fitness level that will help you achieve incredible inner and outer strength. I’ve thoughtfully curated my signature class to flow seamlessly as a whole body workout with minimal breaks but stretches incorporated throughout so it doesn’t feel too daunting. I teach live classes 4 days a week and offer an On Demand Library that is full of live class recordings, as well as pre-recorded “short sweats” for when you’re crunched for time or want to add a little strengthening post run, walk, surf, etc. Between all class formats, the goal is to lengthen and stretch your muscles using safe and effective moves. We use minimal props, so it’s an amazing workout you can do anywhere at any time. Besides the workouts being incredibly accessible and easy to jump into, our MM community is really what sets us apart from any other online platform. I’ve seen clients who have never met each other in real life come together and build relationships with each other, and to me that is almost bigger than the workout. Mel Method was born during the pandemic, so connection and community was and will always be a huge foundation.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
This is a hard one because you don’t want to leave anything out! I’ve always lived on the west side, so I’m partial to my Santa Monica and Venice spots. Start the day with a coffee from Menotti’s in Venice and a walk along the beach. Great White for brunch or lunch; everything on the menu is amazing, especially their breakfast burrito. Shopping around Abbot Kinney and Rose Ave. is usually a go-to when I’ve got girlfriends in town. I try to take all my visitors to Malibu Seafood off the PCH, not only a gorgeous drive but some of the best seafood. American Beauty for martinis and the best burger in LA (I have so many friends who will come at me for this statement, but I’m not wrong). Besides food, long beach days and morning hikes in the Palisades or Malibu are a must. As much time outdoors as possible!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My friend and basically COO, Sarah. When I asked if she would help me build Mel Method she was on board right away and really believed in me and what we could accomplish together. Sarah is the business yin to my yang, helping with a lot of the behind the scenes logistics. I also need to recognize my friends, family, and clients who pushed me to take this leap of faith and start my own business. I’m grateful every day for their continued support.
