We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Spaulding and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
What makes me happy?? What a great question. I would say what makes me happy in my life is being able to inspire others or bring joy into their life. What I love most about our business is that we get to do just that. When you have the abilities to create something that is custom for your client there’s usually a story or meaning behind their order. Not all of the time but most of the time. There are some orders that make you smile and some that make you cry. But, I think it’s what keeps us going is the element of surprise. You never know what order is going to come your way. I also believe that being thankful for everything you have in life makes you happy too. When you appreciate everything then how could you ever be sad.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
WCLD, is a mother daughter owned custom laser engraving business. We have been in business for 6 years. We started out in my mom’s basement. Working day in a day out promoting our business and growing it. During the craziest time in the world in 2020 we decided to take a leap of faith and open a brick-and-mortar shop inside the Waterfront Market at Point Ruston. We outgrew our 10×10 space within a matter of months and now we have a 20×10 space. We have struggled and worked so hard to get to where we are today. We are a business of word of mouth. We have won Best Small Business of the South Sound this year. I also, won 40/40 of the South Sound this year as well. We are so passionate about creating mementos and we have moved into the custom branding side for larger businesses. We are two women that enjoy life, and we want to show people that if you have a dream, you can achieve it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Tacoma is such a cool town. The first place I would take them is down to our shop inside the Waterfront market of course! There are so many great vendors and lots of yummy food. Then we would take a walk down by the water. The views of the water and the mountain look like a dream. It’s so beautiful. I would show them downtown Tacoma. There’s so many great museums, food and shopping as well. Point Defiance park is another great place to go explore. Tacoma just has so many cool places.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would have to say my mom deserves all the credit in this story. Not only is she the coolest mom ever she is the sole reason why WCLD exists. When I was pregnant with my second child, I really wanted something I could do at home while raising my kids. My husband is such an incredible provider but with his job he’s not home much during the school year. I needed something that I could do to help provide for our family and take care of our kids. I had worked for a friend who was doing laser engraving, but he passed away about a year into me working with him. I always enjoyed working and creating on the machines but once he passed, I stopped engraving. My mom knew how much I enjoyed working with him and on the machines and asked if that’s what I wanted to do. After working a few different jobs, I just wasn’t fulfilled with what I was doing. So, my amazing mother invested her 401k into our business and that’s how WCLD was born. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be doing what I love every day.
