We had the good fortune of connecting with Riley Beres and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Riley, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When reflecting on why I wanted to start Socks for Souls, Inc., the number one thing that comes to mind is the desire to fulfill a need. When it came to my attention that socks are the most needed item in homeless shelters, but also the least donated, the answer practically screamed at me. In front of me was a very obvious need in my community, regarding a topic I’m very passionate about, and I knew I could gather the resources to help relieve that demand. While Socks for Souls, Inc. was in operation, we were one of the very few organizations in the United States dedicated to the cause of socks for the homeless. Homelessness is a very misunderstood issue and having a non-profit focused on a very simple gesture gave us a platform to spread awareness to major companies, and the general community. Through community partnerships, Socks for Souls, Inc. proudly distributed over 200,000 pairs of socks. I’m incredibly proud of the work that we did and continue to help educate others on the issue of homelessness in Los Angeles.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Right now I am pursuing acting and TV/Film Editing! Most recently, I am really excited about my work on a Youtube Orginal show (coming soon) as Lead Assistant Editor. I’ve just started my career in that field and I can’t wait for the show to come out, as I think people will really enjoy it. As an actress, it’s been really insightful to learn the craft of editing. I feel very lucky to have experience on both sides of the camera. I feel that the more I learn about every aspect of production, the more I can appreciate it and help those around me when I’m on set.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh my goodness, there are so many places to chose from! I would love to start in the Downtown area, as there are a lot of highlights so close together. I would definitely want to take them to Olvera Street, Union Station, and Grand Central Market. Then a short drive to the Arts District, maybe do some shopping in the Arts District Co-Op! I actually have a blog all about the unique and fun places to visit when in LA. Feel free to check it out! https://www.rileyberes.com/rileysla-blog
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
A huge shoutout to my parents for supporting me every step of the way! Socks for Souls, Inc. would have been nothing without our donors and community partners. There is a complete list on our website, we are so grateful for every single one.
