We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Vargas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steven, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risks shows how much a person is willing to dedicate their time, energy & money to a goal and/or dream even knowing that the odds may not work in their favor. At this moment in my life I am taking a bigger risk with pursuing my music career. I stopped working a full time job and transitioned to working a part time job so that I can have more time to invest in my career but it does have it’s downfalls. Certain struggles that I deal with on a daily basis is the fact that I have way less income, which means I have to cut back on my spending and budget my money correctly to be able to pay my bills and get groceries for me and my girlfriend. Most times I am completely broke and barley getting by but I do love the fact that I have more time to focus on what really makes me happy because in the long run I know the outcome will be worth it. I am very confident in myself and what I do but I can’t lie and say that I’m not scared because it is scary not knowing where this road that’s less traveled may take me. At the same time I know that without risk there is no reward and I am willing to bet it all on myself because I’d rather die knowing that I did everything in my power to get to where I want to get to than to settle for a dead-end job because I was too scared to take the risk.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I feel that what really separates me from other artists is the fact that I never give up, I continue to have this drive that I do with my music and I’ve never had to compromise my self-image or sound just to get ahead. My proudest moment is when me and my good friend Alan Nuncio filmed my music video “Reflections”. The song is about me reflecting on my life and all the struggles I’ve had to endure when I lost my mom due to breast cancer when I was 18 up until now that I am older. The video perfectly encapsulates the lyrics of the song and to see the reactions I’ve gotten from friends, family and random people on it was priceless. I want people to know that regardless of the trials and tribulation that I’ve endured throughout my life I use that to my advantage and place all the negativity and turn it into a something positive with my music.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to Frank & Sons to go buy comic books and collectibles. Then go to Amoebas to go buy some classic Hip Hip records. Afterwards go get some really bomb chili cheese fries at Chrises Burgers in La Puente. Then go to Mickey’s Liquor to buy a six pack of Sharkinators and enjoy them at my place.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost I would love to thank my beautiful girlfriend for supporting me and my dreams by helping me film every music video, allowing me to record music in our small studio apartment, showing up to every event that I perform at and struggling with me as I pursue this passion of mines. I am extremely grateful to have you in my life and I appreciate every single thing you do for me. I also would love to shout out my good friend Ruben Cruz also known as “Cruz” for always supporting me and my music, for helping me invest into the home studio to be able to record songs on our own and for all the positive vibes you send my way every time we kick it or make make music.
