We had the good fortune of connecting with Tracey Laguerre and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tracey, what inspires you?
I’m inspired by the all the women who I see in varies stages of life making beautiful fulfilling lives as artist or working in the arts. It’s really beautiful to see entrepreneurship and creative comes together like that and it encourages me to pursue my dreams.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art stands out because I have a unique voice and visual style, I’m most proud of my work when it tell a great story. Storytelling is a big part of how I got to where I am today. I part myself, my experiences, and my observations and into my work often. I’ve always had an active imagination refining my skills as an artist over the years has helped me channel that creativity at will. It wasn’t easy early in my career I was freelancing commercial work and working 2-3 day jobs all throughout college. I remember one night in college while busing tables at one of my jobs I fell down the stairs with some dirty plates and a group of med students laughed at me. My first thought was ” Don’t they know who I think I am? ” I’ve always always envisioned myself as a very successful artist even back when I was still learning to draw so when others doubted me or put me down it just seemed to me that they were dreadfully confused. That inner confidence helped me through alot. I’ve learned to trust my gut on people, situations etc. My story is about the courage, and vision to pursue your dreams no matter how big it is.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I absolutely love the beach, it’s the perfect way to spend a summer day and to be honest all my friends are artist like me so where ever we go out it pretty common we bring our sketch pad and paints to doodle together as a group or have a drink and draw party. When I’m not drawing I’m dancing (salsa, lindy hop , anything that grooves really) I’m a big fan of gardens I love flowers and nature, hiking is fun too. There is just so much to world to see if I was planning a week long trip with a friend I’d guess I’d go to Las Vegas cause I’ve never been there before. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many people made a difference in my creative journey. Mrs. G my new media teacher in high school who brought me her my first computer drawing tablet with her own money cause she knew I was passionate about animation, all the other kids were jealous and i had to pretend i wasn’t over the moon about it in front of them but I would catch Mrs.G staring at the giant grin on my face as i used my new tablet to become who I am today. My elementary school art teacher a fun hippie name Ms. Greico gave me confidence in my art if it weren’t for her I would have been an architect or a engineer. My college professors and mentors who were always professional and helpful to me when I needed it most. And of course everyone who has ever hired me, or saw the spark that shining inside me.
