We had the good fortune of connecting with Ricky Gonzales and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ricky, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
The one thing is, it’s very competitive and you have to be creative. Especially when you’re first starting out, you sacrifice a lot of time on missing time with family. You have to build up your portfolio, book a lot of shoots, at first a lot of your shoots start out just collaborating with models or practicing with friends and family. You really have to figure out what type of style you want to be shooting. From it being, portraits, landscape, street photography, etc..
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
This career has been a rollercoaster, but life changing. What sets me apart from others, is that when I want something, I go after it and won’t stop until I get it. You have to be a go getter in this industry. What I’m most proud of and excited about, is doing something that I love doing and it’s not just a job. I meet all kinds of different people, I get to explore different places. It was never easy to get where I am today, and I’m still learning everyday. Thats the fun part. How did I overcome the challenges I faced? I just kept on practicing until I felt that I got it right, but there is always room for improvement. The lessons I’ve learned in this industry, is that, don’t compare your work with someone else, just do you. And no matter what happens in life, just hold your head up high and pick yourself back up. I would like the world to know about me and my brand, is that, I’m a family man and I’m out going, fun, and a true friend. With my brand, you’ll always feel comfortable around me and my team and have a good time with your shoots. I come from a small little city called San Fernando, Ca and everybody knows everybody. I live in the heart of it, and a lot of people think they can’t make it out. I’m getting there, it’s been a long road and I still have a lot to do, but I’m very proud of where I was born and raised. I was raised by my grandparents on both sides of my mom and dad. My mom had my at a very young age, so my grandparents step up and raised me. I could honestly say, they would be proud of me if they were still here. God bless their souls..
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend came and visited me. I would take him to a place called Caruso’s, it’s a local Italian food place in my local city. Great pizza , pasta , meatball subs and of course some beers. Then maybe hit a local bowling alley with the family and kids. Next day I would take him to one of the best seafood places here in my city called Rosarito Fish Market to eat and have some drinks as well. I would also have a bbq at the house and invite some of our friends and family over to have a good time. Then I would finish his visit off with, going to Lake Casitas in the Ventura County to do some fishing and have some fun out on the lake.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shout out to the Los Angeles Photography Community, such as streetmeetla, tfti_la, conquer_la, pullup_la, lmeets. Without their photography meets here in Los Angeles and around the surrounding areas, I wouldn’t have known where to start or have an idea how to shoot a certain style. I met so many creative photographers that would become my good friends at these photography meets. Like my friend Calvin @mayhemstudios, I could contact him for any advice I need for any photography needs. Also my friend Oscar @imagerybyoscar, I got into photography because of him. He started teaching me how to shoot and recommended what camera I should start off with. Then there is my friend Joey @josephthephotog, he always gives me support with what I’m doing in this industry, he’s very straight up and a good guy to chill with. Also my buddy that’s from New York but lives here in Los Angeles, Hector @valentino_visuals. His work is so phenomenal and I look up to his work. Hopefully same day I’ll be on his level. I can’t forget my friend Andrew @andrewcwiley owner of HandWrittenLA @handwrittenla. He gave me my first professional paid shoot for his clothing brand, and he contacts me when he has events for his clothing brand to shoot.. @oolbleck @sean.deezy @dopeports @ninja.af @enkrypt_losangeles @yancycnay @sinziaa @portraitsbyjeffery @tcportrait @xmichaelandrew @filthyshadesofjay all these names have inspired me and keep me going. I know I forgot some names and I’m sorry for that. But they all came across my path and help me in this industry.
