When I think about this quote, it reminds me about the importance of living, and not being afraid to fail, or as Uncle Denzel would say, “every failed experiment is one step closer to success….fail forward”. I like the honesty of the quote. Realistically, when you look at life, just being alive in the world today is a risk in and of itself, when a person leaves the house, they are taking a risk (a minimal risk) but still a risk. What appears to be static or permanent is not and it reminds me that too much focus on control can create suffering- to just lean in and be with what is. My favorite quote is – “Of course it is happening inside your head, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?” – written by J. K. Rowling. As a designer who literally depends on her ability to imagine and turn fantasy to reality, this strikes me as an incredibly powerful quote. I take great comfort in knowing that all the colorful sets, fantastical worlds and moody environments that I can conjure in my mind will soon enough be tangible, interactive spaces inhabited by people. In The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, there is a scene in which our heroes are lost in the dark and dismal mines of Moria. Hopeless, Frodo laments their dire situation to Gandalf and says he wishes he’d never found the ring in the first place. Then Gandalf says, “So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.” In essence, the grey wizard is reminding us that we are not in control of the hand dealt to us by fate, but that we are the masters of how we react to our circumstances. For anyone reading who doesn’t know about this documentary-styled show, it covered what goes on behind the scenes on a daily basis of an artist’s work life. This quote has made an impact on me and stayed with me for many reasons. It is multifaceted as it reflects on an outside view, an inside view, and a close and/or personal perspective about anything it is applied to. Not just only about working in the film industry.
