We had the good fortune of connecting with Latrece Joi Russell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Latrece Joi, what do you attribute your success to?
I would say the most important factor behind my success is touching the lives the of the next generation. Showing them and helping them believe that nothing is impossible.

What should our readers know about your business?
Joi Doll Inc. was created from a personal place. I saw a need for better representation and more intentional messaging for young girls, especially when it comes to confidence, identity, and self-worth. I didn’t just want to create a doll—I wanted to create something that could actually shape how a child sees themselves.

What really sets us apart is that our dolls are purpose-driven. They’re designed to be more than toys—they’re tools for empowerment. Everything from the look to the spoken messaging is intentional, helping girls build confidence, embrace who they are, and understand their potential early on.

I’m most proud of the impact. Hearing from parents and seeing how young girls connect with Joi Doll—that’s the most rewarding part. It lets me know that this is bigger than a product, it’s something that’s truly making a difference.

The journey definitely wasn’t easy. There were challenges with resources, access, and just figuring things out without a clear roadmap. I had moments where things didn’t move as fast as I wanted, or doors didn’t open right away. But I stayed consistent, kept building, and remained focused on my purpose. I learned how to be resourceful and how to keep going even when things felt uncertain.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that resilience is everything. You have to believe in your vision before anyone else does. I’ve also learned that storytelling matters—people don’t just connect with what you sell, they connect with why you created it.

What I want the world to know is that Joi Doll is more than a brand—it’s a movement. It’s about representation, confidence, and creating something meaningful for the next generation. My story shows that you don’t need perfect conditions to start—you just need the courage to begin and the determination to keep going.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting Los Angeles for a week, I’d curate an experience that captures the city’s essence—effortless luxury, creative energy, cultural depth, and those unforgettable, cinematic moments that only L.A. delivers.

We’d begin where the city breathes—along the coast. A sunset at Santa Monica Pier followed by a walk down to Venice Beach sets the tone: vibrant, expressive, and alive. Dinner at Catch LA introduces that signature L.A. blend of elevated dining and social scene—where ambiance is just as important as what’s on the plate.

From there, I’d lean into the city’s iconic identity. A morning hike up to Griffith Observatory offers sweeping views that remind you just how expansive possibility can feel here. Later, a stroll along the Hollywood Walk of Fame is less about the stars on the ground and more about the energy of ambition that defines the city.

No L.A. itinerary is complete without a touch of refinement. An afternoon on Rodeo Drive—whether shopping or simply observing—captures the polished, aspirational side of the city. Lunch at The Ivy feels timeless, offering a glimpse into L.A.’s classic social scene.

But what truly elevates Los Angeles is its cultural heartbeat. A visit to the California African American Museum, followed by time spent in Leimert Park, grounds the experience in history, creativity, and community. Dinner at Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen adds a layer of authenticity—rich in flavor and legacy.

Of course, L.A. is also about aesthetic living. Brunch at The Butcher, The Baker, The Cappuccino Maker and an afternoon along Melrose Avenue turns the day into a visual experience—where style, storytelling, and self-expression collide.

To reset, I’d escape into nature. A hike through Runyon Canyon Park followed by a quiet moment at El Matador Beach offers contrast—reminding you that beneath the city’s fast pace is a deep sense of calm and beauty.

We’d close the week with rooftop views at Perch an helicopter ride over Hollywood and studio city and a final stroll through The Grove—a perfect blend of leisure and lifestyle.

To me, Los Angeles is more than a destination—myself and Joi Doll second home . It’s where ambition meets reinvention, where culture shapes identity, and where every moment has the potential to become part of your story.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shoutout to my mother Victoria Gatling whom was the first person I seen jump out and become a full time entrepreneur. Watching her hard work and dedication proved that your create your own standard of living.
