We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Terpstra and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, how do you think about risk?
The best opportunities are messy. If you wait for everything to be perfect, you will miss the opportunity. As a sales coach, I see this all of the time! It is actually a subconscious self sabotaging behavior to look for perfection before going all in. I see this present itself when clients first come to me with a list of things that need to be done before they take on their first or next client. Having everything perfect is an endless unachievable cycle and so do only the essential and then jump in to get those clients. The best news? The more clients = more revenue = ability to hire = working on making things “perfect” much easier. When I first started my business, I took on a full roster of clients and built my curriculum alongside those first few clients (which made the program even better!). Had I waited to have the curriculum for my program completely done, I would have missed the opportunity to grow my business rapidly. As Susan Wojcicki, CEO of YouTube, says “Rarely are opportunities presented to you with a yellow bow on top… opportunities, the good ones, they’re messy and confusing and hard to recognize. They’re risky. They challenge you.”
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As a sales coach and strategist, I help coaches, consultants and service-based entrepreneurs price, package, position and sell signature offers to soulmate clients online. My curriculum and coaching specializes in maximizing lead conversion by mastering sales conversations and offer positioning. Without sales, there is no business. Always start with selling in mind. I spent over a decade working for three Fortune 500’s, ran a Toastmaster’s club and then left my 9-5 to pursue my purpose after gaining the expertise I needed working for these companies. Now I teach online business owners how to sell with ease! Working with me…means falling in love with selling. It means confidently, comfortably and consistently converting leads into high-paying clients month after month using my rinse and repeat system. Instead of wasting small fortunes generating thousands of new leads every single month, why not master selling and boost your conversion rate so that you don’t need as many leads? Money and stress saved. I consider myself a master of ethical sales psychology. This is important because there is responsibility with selling, but that doesn’t mean you compromise rapid sales growth. Using my proven method means that you will never feel pressured to use aggressive and manipulative tactics to get yeses from potential clients. However, you can’t just wing sales calls and think that your soulmate clients with just say yes. It is your duty to communicate your value clearly and motivate the right buyer to say yes. That is what I teach. That is what works when selling coaching and services online.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Welcome to Orange County! These are the musts… Lido Marine Village Electric Boat Ride (www.eboatsrental.com) in the Newport Beach harbor with yummy food onboard from the local fish joint, Bear Flag Fish Company (www.bearflagfishco.com). A beautiful stay at Lido House (www.lidohousehotel.com) so that you are close to the beach and can enjoy the best accommodations in town. Cocktails on the rooftop overlooking Newport Beach at Topside Roof Deck Lounge. Stand Up Paddle Boarding with Pirate Coast in Newport Beach Back Bay (www.piratecoastpaddle.com). Jump on over to Catalina Island for a few days and enjoy Descanso Beach Club! Zip line tour, private beach, a massage and your favorite drinks beachside. Once you are back, rent a bike, take a hike and spend time enjoying the beaches of Newport Beach, Laguna Beach and Huntington Beach. Get dressed up and enjoy the best dining experience in the OC at Mastro’s Restaurant, Costa Mesa. The list could go on, but these are the musts and my favorites living here for 36 years.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This Shoutout goes to Sheryl Sandberg. Her book, Lean In, gave me the courage I needed to press the pedal in my career without fearing that meant motherhood had to be compromised.
